Clare Balding Joins the Sabrina Boat for Channel 5’s Tales From The Riverbank

We were thrilled to welcome the iconic Clare Balding aboard the Sabrina Boat back in 2023 during filming for her Channel 5 series, Tales From The Riverbank, airing February 2025, The episode, which explores the beauty and history of the River Severn, shines a light on some of Shrewsbury’s most treasured landmarks — and we’re proud to have played a part in it.

Exploring Shrewsbury from the River Severn

In the first episode of the series, Clare sets out on a journey along the River Severn, uncovering stories and meeting locals along the way. Her Shrewsbury stop includes a visit to the Darwin House and its scenic grounds, where she chats with esteemed historian John Hughes about the town’s rich heritage.

But the highlight for us? Watching Clare step aboard the Sabrina Boat to experience the stunning Severn loop from the water. During her time on board, she had a lovely conversation with Sabrina Boat owner Dilwyn Jones, discussing Shrewsbury’s riverside charm and the importance of showcasing it to a wider audience.

A Proud Day for Shrewsbury and Sabrina

Reflecting on the day of filming, Dilwyn Jones said:

“It was a great honour to have Clare Balding join us on the Sabrina Boat. She is very much a national treasure, so it was great to show her Shrewsbury from the River Severn. I think the town as a whole were excited for her visit and to see our amazing town on the TV.”

It’s not every day you get to host a television legend and help bring national attention to your hometown — especially one as scenic and story-filled as Shrewsbury.
